King Diamond joining Metallica on the big stage
by: Dan Keener
NEWS – Well, with Lemmy officially announced last week, Activision has now broken out Mercyful Fate frontman King Diamond as the next icon to join Metallica in their Guitar Hero Metallica game. Along with Kind Diamond himself, the game will feature his cross-bone microphone, Eye Necklace and a re-recorded version of “Evil” done by four of the five original band members. After the last two, I am trying to wrack my brain who else Metallica may have paid homage too over the years that may be included in the game. Any thoughts, post them in the comments.Comment

Lemmy from Motorhead guesting in Guitar Hero: Metallica
by: Dan Keener
NEWS – Activision announced today that Motorhead lead singer and bassist Lemmy will be an in-game character in Guitar Hero: Metallica. Metallica has always had a soft spot for Motorhead, having honored the group with a seven-cover performance of Motorhead’s songs called The Lemmy’s. In addition to the Lemmy appearance, Motorhead’s 2008 re-recording of “Ace of Spades” will also be included on the set list. Guitar Hero: Metallica is scheduled to hit retail on March 29th. Check out a couple of images of Lemmy in-game provided by Newscom.

Incubus headlines Guitar Hero World Tour acoustic pack
by: Randy Kalista
NEWS – As promised, the Acoustic Pack for Guitar Hero World Tour is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store. I was thoroughly derided by the rest of the staff for endorsing the Ryan Adams’ version of "Wonderwall"–I’m not bitter–which is part of the three-pack further comprised of "Drive" by Incubus (post-grunge rockers), and "New Slang" by the Shins (Modest Mouse tour buddies).

Individual Guitar Hero World Tour instruments coming February 15th
by: John Yan
NEWS – How about a new guitar or drum kit for the day after Valentine’s Day? Activision has announced that the wireless drum kit and guitar from Guitar Hero World Tour will finally be available for purchase on February 15th. Let’s hope they fixed the issues with the drum kit as the one I have has one of those problems registering hits on a few of the pads. Even without those problems, I didn’t like the drums all that much more than the Rock Band drums. The guitar though is great and I really enjoy the slide even though it’s not that accurate most of the time. The instruments will also work with Guitar Hero: Metallica coming in the spring.Comment
Guitar Hero Metallica Comes With Slice Of Lemmy [Activision]
Metallica announced today that Guitar Hero Metallica will feature Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister as a playable character, presumably when one plays the band’s hit “Ace of Spades,” one of many guest tracks in the game.
It should be a very profitable year for the English bassist, as he’ll also be appearing in the similarly umlauted Brütal Legend from Double Fine Productions, with “Ace of Spades” also licensed for Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned. Unconfirmed is a guest appearance from Lemmy’s mole, which is rumored to appear in the next Puyo Puyo title from Sega.
Metallica’s web site also points out that the band has convinced “another buddy to join in the fun,” which we’ll take to mean “turned into polygons and motion captured.” Could it be King Diamond? Could it?!

Standalone Guitar Hero Controllers Incoming
Activision has announced that standalone controllers for their blockbuster video game Guitar Hero World Tour will be available on February 15.
Activision announces Guitar Hero Greatest Hits
Yet another Guitar Hero title is on the way, and it’s not Metallica or On Tour Decades either. This Guitar Hero will be a compilation of the previous Guitar Hero games’ greatest hits. Aptly named Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, the game will include songs from Guitar Hero, Rock The 80s, Guitar Hero II and so forth. The game is due for release this summer for the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 3. A tracklisting has yet to be revealed but getting songs from the previous games with full band compatibility? Sounds alright. In addition, this may mark the first time that Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II tracks are available on the Nintendo Wii as well.
Guitar Hero Standalone Controllers Hit This Week [Guitar Hero World Tour]
Finally. Starting Sunday Guitar Hero World Tour players will be able to purchase individual guitar controllers and drum kit controllers in stores in North America.
While the quite lengthy press release goes into all kinds of details we already knew about the drum, the guitar and the songs you can use to play them with, it doesn’t actually list a price.
Fortunately GameStop, which has the correct date, does.
According to the online retailer the Wireless Drum kit will sell for $100, while the guitar will sell for $70.
Guitar Hero ‘greatest hits compilation,’ new GH DS coming by mid-year

During today’s Activision Blizzard conference call, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith boasted of a “robust lineup” of three new Guitar Hero titles dropping before the midpoint of the year: Guitar Hero: Metallica in Q1 as well as “a new Guitar Hero game for the Nintendo DS” and “a separate greatest hits compilation Guitar Hero game” in calendar Q2, (through June). In case that’s not clear, the Guitar Hero Greatest Hits pack (or GH2 as we’re likely to think of it) will include “full-band versions of some of the most popular songs from previous Guitar Hero games and will be made available for the 360, PS3 and Wii.”
Something tells us that despite some healthy competition from the likes of Rock Band, with products like this “greatest hits compilation” on the way, we’re not going to be ripping our Guitar Hero tracks anytime soon.

Without Guitar Hero, We Might Never Have Had Brütal Legend [Double Fine]
The fate of Double Fine Productions’ Brütal Legend has been in doubt before, but without the success of Harmonix and RedOctane’s Guitar Hero, it might never have seen the light of day.
Double Fine founder Tim Schafer tells OXM that pre-Guitar Hero, when the team was pitching concept of a roadie turned savior of a mystical, heavy metal inspired fantasy world, it was met with a response bordering on brain dead.
Says Schafer of the game’s initial pitches: “We got feedback like, ‘It’s good, but have you thought about making it a hip-hop game, or making it country?’ And then Guitar Hero debuted, and that stuff changed. Harmonix had such great taste when they created the tracklist. It’s obvious that music fans picked those songs. So metal really has had a resurgence.”
Schafer points to another cultural zeitgeist, one that spoke to him, saying that “It’s time for this game to be made!” That moment? A scene from the 2003 movie School of Rock, which also happens to feature Brütal Legend star Jack Black.
“There’s a scene in School of Rock where Jack is singing ‘Immigrant Song’ by Led Zeppelin,” Schafer recalls. “He does this thing, ‘Hammer…of the gods!’ And they cut to a shot of the girl in the van, and there’s an Iron Maiden sticker on the wall.” Truly a watershed cinematic moment.
Mr. Schafer dishes much more dirt on the forthcoming Brütal Legend, including new details on gameplay features yet to be revealed.
