Metallica’s Hetfield: Games are "Gateway Drug" to Music [Guitar Hero: Metallica]
Metallica frontman James Hetfield continues the payday publicity blitz in an interview with Rolling Stone that comes straight out of the celebrity endorsement playbook for music games.
There seems to be a formula to these interviews: 1) Genuflect to rhythm games as a whole, citing at least one quality that inspires music appreciation. 2) Tell people how you, a world-class musician, suck atrociously at playing the instrument controllers. 3) Mention the oldest-school game you can think of when someone asks you what you grew up playing, even if you haven’t touched a console in years and won’t ever again once your game finally releases.
How does Hetfield do? Well:
1) “I think Guitar Hero is a great gateway drug to real music. If you’ve got the music bug, nothing’s gonna stop you. It’s your destiny to express your gift.”
Check!
2) “The initial thought was, ‘This is gonna be so easy.’ And then I picked it up and tried doing it. And it was like [makes plunking sound]. ‘Are you kidding me? You guys suck! You’re supposed to follow me!’ I gotta be on with the lines. And Metallica’s not as on with the lines as some other bands. Especially having Lars as a drummer [Laughs].”
A little overboard there, but still satisfactory.
3) [Q: What's the first video game you fell in love with?] “My buddy had Pong. We were obsessed with it. That was it, man.”
And … check! Awesome job, James Hetfield!

Beyonce Shills For Rhythm Heaven, Loves Guitar Hero [Nintendo]
Nintendo’s latest spokesceleb? Beyonce! She’s hopefully going to sell millions of copies of the extremely bootylicious Rhythm Heaven when it comes stateside by kicking back with her Nintendo DSi and having fun on-screen.
Beyonce’s celebrity endorsement of the Nintendo DS certainly isn’t the first. She joins other professional famous people like Nicole Kidman, Liv Tyler and Patrick Stewart in convincing non-gamers that they too should upgrade to the camera-equipped DSi.
Ms. Knowles tells Entertainment Weekly that she’s an old-school Nintendo fan, raised on Super Mario Bros. and the NES. Beyonce even claims to have a non-contractual interest in video games, with tastes ranging from Guitar Hero on the Wii to Brickbreaker on the Blackberry to the Shin Megami Tensei series. Yes, I did make that last one up.

Rumor: Transformers Tune Coming to Guitar Hero
“The Touch,” the epic ballad that you will remember best from the soundtrack to 1986’s Transformers: The Movie is coming to Guitar Hero, according to the song’s creator Stan Bush.
“I’ve been holding off announcing this, but “The Touch” is going to
be in Guitar Hero! Activision will be releasing it as a free download,” Bush wrote in a letter to Transformers fan site Seibertron.com.
Unfortunately, Bush could not provide a time frame for when the track might appear in-game.
Good news for Guitar Hero fans, but it makes me wonder how exactly the Rock Band camp might respond. My suggestion? A cover of the theme song from the Transformers cartoon sung by Orson “Unicron” Welles.
Yes, he passed in ‘85, but if Dirt Devil can make Fred Astaire dance with a vacuum, I’m sure MTV Games can work out something equally morbid.

Man Beaten by a Guitar Hero Controller and for Good Reason
I guess this is what they talk about when they say violence in video games. hhaha
But really, Here is the story.
Gary Skoien, a former Cook County GOP Chairman (and current Palatine Township GOP committeeman) was recently caught in his children’s playroom with 2 prostitutes. His wife was the one who caught him. Apparently she went into a fit of rage and pounded the man with her fists, soon after picking up a Guitar Hero Controller and beating the man with the toy guitar.
Apparently the man had a different view of the situation and told police that he was just “talking with some friends”.
I call bullshit on him. I can’t see someone losing it that much unless she knew some shit was wrong or that she walked in on something.
I’m pretty sure you could fuck someone up with a Guitar Controller.

King Diamond A Playable Character in Guitar Hero Metallica

As it has been hinted in the past by King Diamond himself saying there would be a “special treat” in store for Merciful Fate fans for Guitar Hero Metallica. It was also hinted by Metallica saying that there would be one more playable announced before release.
The trophy list for Guitar Hero Metallica has finally been released. The trophy list contained a particularly interesting trophy that confirms that King Diamond will be a playable character in Guitar Hero Metallica.

I’m thinking that pretty much everything about the upcoming Guitar Hero Metallica has now been released to the public by now.
The game drops March 29th, 2009. Get your feet ready for that Double Bass Pedal on the drums.
JamStykk Guitar Hero Controller is Ready to Rock Your World
I’ve known about this item for a little while now, but never got the chance to write about it. Pictured above, you have what is known as the JamStykk Guitar Controller made by the company Jamstykk. They are the makers of a bunch of gaming accessories featuring all types of different products, but mostly focused on music gaming.
The JamStykk Guitar Controller
The JamStykk Wireless Guitar Controller is a Guitar Controller like no other. It breaks away from the idea of trying to replicate the feel of a real guitar, which is the goal of most other controllers that are being relesed. The Jamstykk Controller is focused on functionality and compatability. It is compatible with all Guitar Hero and Rock Band video games to this point for the PS3/PS2/PC gaming platforms. For all the people who have downloaded the popular Frets on Fire game for the PC and don’t have a controller to play with, this may be a good option for you.

There have been tons of times during the past few years that I have had to bring guitar hero controllers over to another house. Although regular controllers are not that horrible to deal with, the Jamtykk definitely makes transportation a hell of a lot easier. It is designed like a telescope. When you want to play, you pull it out. When your friend asks you to come over and play some GH, just push the neck back in and it shrinks to about 13 5/8 inches. Throw the strap over your shoulder and your on your way. Its the same strap used to hold the guitar when your playing.
As far as actually playing with the Guitar Controller goes, I can not yet say if it is good to play on or not. At first glance I thought it might be awkward, but I watched a few videos on youtube and it looks like its not a bad controller to play with at all. People seem to use it very well in fact. Check out a video of someone playing below!
The buttons seem big and easy to press from the video and the person has no trouble doing well on the song. I have been in contact with the people over a JamStykk, and they said they are going to try to get me a review copy. Once that happens I will do a review of it here at let you all know how it plays and how it feels to hold.
Here is another video of someone using a Jamstykk Controller while playing.
Some cool kid in a mask rocking out with a Jamstykk.
As far as price goes with the Jamstykk, you can get your hands on one for a very reasonable price of $39.99. When getting your controller you have the choices of black, white, or pink as color of controller.
Other Jamstykk Stuff
Jamstykk also carries a couple of other cool products listed below.
- Aluminum Drum Sticks
- A “Drum throne“.. Otherwise known as a drum seat.
- And a bunch of Guitar like controllers
For all you entrepreneurial people out there that have $3,700 laying around, you can buy the Jamstykk Guitar Controller wholesale in orders of 200 units. Do the math and thats about $18 a unit. JamStykk Sells them for $39.99. Thats about $20 profit per unit at that price. Shit throw them on ebay and make a few bucks.
Stay tuned for a Full review of the Jamstykk Guitar controller sometime in the near future!
Guitar Hero Metallica Trailer – Interview with Lead Designer
A brand spankin’ new Guitar Hero Metallica Trailer has just been released (shown below) by the lovely people over at GameTrailers.com and I do have to say it’s a pretty sweet trailer and definitely gives you a damn good look at what Guitar Hero Metallica is all about. This trailer definitely made me want the game a hell of a lot more.
Some of the things talked about were the variety of songs included on the Guitar Hero Metallica Song List. The songs look awesomely fun to play from a Guitar Hero standpoint. The game has a wide range of difficulty levels to give players of all skill levels a chance to play and have fun. As you know by now, the game will feature double bass pedals for more realistic drumming. The game has tons of extras, videos, bootlegs, Metallica facts, pictures, lyrics, and a ton more. The game brings back the music creation aspect of Guitar Hero World Tour. As a real drummer, I will LOVE the feature that lets you take any song on the game, remove the drum parts, and lets you freestyle the drumming for the song. Graphically, the game looks ridiculous. It looks like an all around great game. Definitely give the trailer below a look.
If you want to be the first to get your hands on the game, you can Pre-Order it now directly from Red Octane with FREE SHIPPING. They also have a couple of good deals on bundles. You can get 2 Guitar Controllers and the game for $150, which isn’t bad if you don’t already own 9 plastic guitars. Or you could give the JamStykk a try on it.

Guitar Hero World Tour is Coming to PC

According to the computer chip maker Intel, it looks like Guitar Hero World Tour is coming to the PC. I mean I would never personally buy the PC version of the game, but I’m sure there are people who don’t own any consoles that would like to enjoy the awesomeness of Guitar Hero.
To this point only two versions of Guitar Hero have been ported to the PC, Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero Aerosmith. Pretty much every console game since Neversoft took over developement has been ported. And you can now add Guitar Hero World Tour to that list.
There has been no word as far as a release date goes. I’m sure it will be sometime this year. No word on whether Guitar Hero Metallica will be ported also..
As more details are released they will be posted.

Gibsons Loses It’s Guitar Hero Patent Case

Quite a while back we posted about the news that Guitar Maker and Guitar Hero partner, Gibson, had decided to take Activision to court saying that Guitar Hero (and Rock band) had infringed upon a patent that the company has held since 1999. The patent covered “simulating a musical performance using a 3D headset display and stereo speakers”.
The claim, which was basically a bunch of bullshit with no merit and just an attempt to cash in on the success of Guitar Hero, has finally been thrown out of court. Apparently the case was a complete joke even as far as Gibson’s own legal team goes. They changed council several times, failed to provide evidence of infringement, and often made ridiculous statements that contracted other previous statements that were made by Gibson. Not to mention Gibson was already in bed with Guitar Hero with the Guitar Controller Design licensing.
I wonder what this will mean for future Guitar Controller Designs as I’m sure the relationship between the two company’s has taken a hit with the lawsuit. I sure wouldn’t be happy with people suing me.
Gibson now has the choice to appeal the decision, as well as continue pursuing their case with Rock Band, but let’s just all hope they save their money and end it all here.

March DLC Announced; Queen makes DLC debut!

This month’s World Tour DLC has just recently been announced, and I must say it looks incredible. The month is kicked off by a few European Track Packs. But wait, it gets better. Not only do we get more Jimi Hendrix, but the legendary band Queen makes their Guitar Hero DLC debut. The full list of March DLC is just below.
European Track Pack 3 – March 5th
“Break It Out” – Vanilla Sky
“In the Shadows” – The Rasmus
“C’est Comme Ça” – Les Rita Mitsouko
Rise Against Track Pack – March 12th
“Death Blossoms” – Rise Against
“Audience of One” – Rise Against
“Ready to Fall” – Rise Against
European Track Pack 4 – March 19th
“What Have You Done” – Within Temptation
“Hier Kommt Alex” – Die Toten Hosen
“Carolina” – M-Clan
The Jimi Hendrix Track Pack 2 – March 19th
“Freedom” – Jimi Hendrix
“Angel” – Jimi Hendrix
“Foxy Lady (Live at Woodstock)” – Jimi Hendrix
Queen Track Pack – March 26th
“We Are the Champions” – Queen
“Fat Bottomed Girls” – Queen
“C-lebrity” – Queen & Paul Rodgers
Also, the James Bond Theme will be released as single by an artist that is TBA. Not to mention that the previous Jimi Hendrix Track Pack will also be available for the Wii this month.
I personally will be purchasing “Foxy Lady”, “We Are the Champions”, and “Fat Bottomed Girls”. I would have much rather preferred a diffrerent Queen song other than “C-lebrity”, simply because Freddie Mercury is not the vocalist. It would have been nice if “Stone Cold Crazy” would have been thrown in there for those of us not buying Guitar Hero: Metallica.
Overall it’s another great month. Keep up the good work Activision.
EDIT: There also is a new Rise Against Track Pack that was just recently announced! This pack will feature a previously unreleased single, “Death Blossoms”, and two of the band’s previous hits.

Guitar Hero Greatest Hits Officially Announced, w/ Trialer and Partial Song List
It looks like Activision officially let the cat out of the bag for the newly announced game Guitar Hero Greatest Hits. Today they released a brand new trailer (shown above, its actually really boring.), a partial Guitar Hero Greatest Hits Song List, and the Guitar Hero Greatest Hits Release Date. All this happened during an interview with Paul Gadbois.
- “Them Bones” – Alice in Chains
- “Killer Queen” – Queen
- “Nothin’ But A Good Time” – Poison
- “Killing in the Name” – Rage Against The Machine
- “I Wanna Rock” – Twisted Sister
- “I Love Rock N Roll” – Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
- “Barracuda” – Heart
- “Through the Fire and Flames!” – Dragonforce
And of course the most famous GH song of all
- “Through the Fire and Flames” – Dragonforce
Expect the game to be very similar to Guitar Hero World Tour as far as features and gameplay.
Only difference is this contains songs from games that didn’t include drums or mic, and brings them back up to date. Reworking of the tracks was necessary as the first game didn’t have hammer-ons or pull-offs. Old fans of the game should get a new refreshing play. There will be 48 songs in total for you to enjoy. Eventually the entire previous GH song catalog will be available through DLC. SWEET!
It will be released for the 360, PS3, PS2, and Wii and arrive in June of 2009.
On Xbox 360 and PS3 it will have a suggested retail price of $59.99, while Wii and PS2 will be $49.99 and $39.99 respectively.
Stay Tuned for More Details!

Rock Band Versus Guitar Hero, Which Is Better?
While both excellent games, Harmonix’ Rock Band series edges out the competition – for now at least.
