The price for the new game is about the same anywhere, but you can maybe get a used one at gamestop which will come with a "guarantee" to work.
As for which version to get, guitar hero 1 is hard to find but has some fun songs. Guitar hero 2 has more classic rock songs and guitar hero 3 has a little more metal rock with downloadable content if you have internet. Finally, guitar hero tour is coming out in the fourth quarter of the year which means you will have to wait. Also, it is more expensive but it comes with other instruments such as drums and microphone and 2 guitars. It also comes with user generated songs which allows you to play what you want.
I recommend getting guitar hero 3 since it is the newest game with the most song variety. But if you can wait a while and want to save up for the new game coming out, by all means go for it.
