How do you get different songs on guitar hero?

Author: You know when you see random different songs on guitar hero and rockband that arent usually on the game? How do you do that? Download it? Buy something for it? WHAT?! Help

Both games have support for Downloadable Content. Each song costs $2, but if you buy some of the larger packs as a whole pack on Rock Band, you get one song ‘free.’ This is not available on PS2.
There’s also these things called ‘customs.’ Provided you have a chart file (which tells the games when and where the notes should be) matching the song, you can play any song you wish. This is only available on certain consoles for certain games.
