How do you use the microphone on Guitar Hero World Tour?

Author: I bought the new guitar hero today and I played it using the drums and guitar but when i tried to use the microphone on quick play I clicked on “Vocals” but it said that I need to plug in a microphone. So am I doing anything wrong.
P.S. What are the 2 usb ports on the wireless receiver on the drums and guitar for?

What system is it for?
If it's the Wii version, you have to have a free wiimote to navigate menus with and such. Even if you have other instruments plugged in and are playing multiplayer, the mic still needs its own wiimote.
Post your system.
Though I'm guessing that on any other system, you also have to have a free controller in the slot you're using the mic for.
