Since guitar hero:smash hits is an expansion do I need to own a main game to play it?

Author: Is it like a Sims type deal where I need to own guitar hero 1,2,3,etc… to be able to play the game?

It is not an expansion at all. It is a seperate game that includes about 50 tracks from guitar hero 1, 2, 3 and aerosmith.
You don’t need the older games to play it.
